Chapter 37

Five, six. I crossed the River Styx.

Veronica elected to take an Uber to Bear County Correctional. Her car was back at Dr. Jane Bernard’s office and her first instinct was to get the driver to take her there to retrieve it. But while she’d snuck away from two deputies in the hospital, the sheriff and perhaps even Freddie, were likely to have returned to the site of the fire. Getting away from them would prove considerably more difficult.

There was no satisfaction in being vindicated, in having her initial suspicion that Ken Cameron was behind this coming true.

For one, it reinforced the idea that her synesthesia wasn’t infallible. She’d sat across from Ken and when he’d admitted to calling Marlowe and she had been convinced that he was lying.

Second, considering that the ex-cop was locked up this entire time, it raised the question of who he was using to perform his dirty work on the outside.

“You want me to wait here?” the driver asked.

Veronica looked at the prison. It was well past visiting hours now, but she thought she could once again leverage her relationship with Steve to get inside.

What Veronica planned on doing once in Ken’s presence was another question entirely.

“No, I’m good. Thanks.”

Veronica exited the vehicle and hurried up to the gates. As expected, her badge got her through the front doors. Unfortunately, that’s where her progress ended. The prison seemed to be on some sort of lockdown.

“What’s going on?” Veronica asked the first deputy she saw. She was hoping that she’d encounter the same man as before, the one with the gray hair and wide eyes, but that wasn’t the case.

The much younger deputy pursed his lips and indicated in no uncertain terms that visiting hours were over and that she was to leave now.

Veronica once again pulled out her badge.

“My name’s Detective Shade with the Greenham PD.”

The deputy was unimpressed.

“Bear County employees only past this point. After the lockdown, you can return and—”

“Veronica?” She turned in response to her name and saw Kristin Newberry starting her way. The gray-haired woman was wearing her coroner’s jacket and looked exhausted. “I didn’t expect to see you here.”

Likewise.

Kristin Newberry only showed up when there was a body.

“Who died?”

Kristin shrugged.

“Not sure, just got here.”

Breathing heavily, Veronica asked the same question to the deputy who had stopped her.

The man’s upper lip curled.

“Like I said before, you can’t be in here. Now, would you please leave the premises?”

“Was it Ken? Tell me it wasn’t Ken Cameron.”

“That’s it, you’re trespassing.”

The deputy reached for her arm and Veronica recoiled.

“I wouldn’t—” Kristin started, but she was interrupted.

“Deputy Hill, stand down. Do not touch her.”

The deputy froze and Veronica turned to see Sheriff Steve Burns coming toward her.

“Sheriff, she’s with Greenham PD and we’re on lockdown so—”

“What were you going to do, Deputy? Arrest her? Throw her in jail?”

“She was trespassing, and I was trying—”

“Why don’t you go on break.”

Deputy Hill’s eyes darted to Veronica.

“It’s-it’s lockdown. Everyone—”

“Go on break, now, Deputy Hill.”

Great, that’s all I need, Veronica thought as the deputy stormed off following an angry glare, another enemy.
